When soaring blue and white striped tents – the largest of which is 62 feet tall and 135 feet wide –  arrive in town, something extraordinary is underway.

As Canada-based Cirque du Soleil (French for “Circus of the Sun”) presented its mesmerizing circus arts extravaganza, “BAZZAR,” on its North American tour this year, Fuel Logic was operating behind the scenes to help ensure the show’s success.

When the Circus Calls

Cirque du Soleil's Bazzar

It was late 2023 when a call came into Fuel Logic’s Dallas-based headquarters inquiring about fuel.

Facing challenges with several fuel suppliers at the time, the operators of Cirque du Soleil’s BAZZAR show were seeking not only a reliable, quality fuel source, but one that could provide fuel for multiple shows across several states.

As one of the nation’s leading mobile fuel suppliers, Fuel Logic was well prepared to assist Cirque du Soleil, a theatrical production giant in the entertainment industry.

No matter how big or small of an operation, or how many gallons of fuel are needed, every client who calls Fuel Logic can expect the same level of superior service and attention to detail for fuel and gasoline delivery needs.

Fuel Logic’s consultants listened to what the BAZZAR show required, carefully assessed the operations’ needs, and set a strategic plan in motion for fuel delivery to the iconic Cirque du Soleil shows.

Mobile Fuel for a Mobile Village

Stories from the Road

Since debuting in India in 2018, BAZZAR has been electrifying audiences the world over with its whimsical universe of remarkable aesthetics and infinite creativity brought to life by its talented troupe of acrobats, dancers, and musicians.

While many Cirque du Soleil shows are performed in arenas or theaters, others, including BAZZAR, take place under towering big top tents.

A purposely misspelled homage to a Middle Eastern bazaar, Cirque du Soleil’s BAZZAR is a tapestry of the high-energy excitement, collision of colors and sounds, and diverse characters that might be found in a traditional bazaar.

While it’s hard to truly comprehend, the spectacle of Cirque du Soleil’s “village on wheels” for BAZZAR takes shape over six days as the signature Big Top, an entrance/VIP tent, rehearsal spaces, a kitchen, offices, and more, are meticulously constructed. The Big Top seats more than 1,500 people and can withstand winds up to 75 mph.

The show site relies on local water supply and telecommunication facilities, as well as mobile fuel, to support its infrastructure.

While the tents are climate-controlled and must maintain optimal temperatures for the artists, equipment, and guests, there are countless lights, sound systems, and visual elements that also must be precisely powered and fine-tuned.

Peak Performance Demands Creative Fueling Solutions

Cirque du Soleil

Known for its ability to provide mobile fueling for almost any situation, industry, or location, Fuel Logic is committed to delivering fueling solutions that are uniquely tailored to each client’s specific circumstances.

BAZZAR’s first tour across U.S. cities included numerous shows over several consecutive months in Charlotte, N.C., St. Petersburg, Fla., Hartford, Conn., and Minneapolis, Minn., and required a steady supply of bulk fuel.

“We had fuel lined up to be delivered to each show site three to four times a week,” said Brandon Ward, fuel consultant with Fuel Logic. “Throughout 2024, we have been delivering 4,000 to 5,000 gallons a week, or anywhere from 20,000 to 24,000 gallons of fuel each month.”

Ward said that fuel was typically delivered to on-site bulk tanks, or fuel cubes, which could then be directly pumped into a variety of generators and equipment integral to the BAZZAR show.

Fuel Logic’s bulk fuel service translated into an ongoing and uninterrupted power supply for BAZZAR’s lights, sound systems, portable generators, and more, as well as a streamlined way for show operators to efficiently and seamlessly manage fuel levels, usage, scheduling, analytics, route planning and invoicing.

Driven by Passion, Power, and Precision

Cirque du Soleil's Bazzar

Defined by a dazzling swirl of color, music, and movement, Cirque du Soleil’s enchanting production of BAZAAR is a testament to the company’s enduring legacy.

Since 1984, Cirque du Soleil has grown from a modest troupe of street performers founded by Gilles Ste-Croix to the international success story it is today.

With striking costumes, magical lighting, and original music, Cirque du Soleil now employs more than 4,000 employees, including 1,200 artists from 80 different nationalities.

It has inspired more than 378 million people spanning 6 continents and 86 countries with its exquisite hybrid of circus, acrobatics, and dance performances.

While Fuel Logic fuel teams may not flip, twist, and twirl while delivering fuel, we do share a common bond with Cirque du Soleil: passion for what we do.

We are passionate about exceeding our customers’ expectations for mobile fuel service that delivers convenience, professionalism, flexibility, and reliability – every time.

When serving our clients – large and small – across the United States, we pride ourselves on going the extra mile and doing whatever it takes to improve, enhance, and fortify our customers’ operations.

“Challenging conditions due to severe weather, unexpected power outages, logistical roadblocks, time constraints, or specialized circumstances only motivate us that much more to get fuel where it needs to be,” said Ward. “We truly enjoy coming up with creative fueling solutions and doing everything possible to support our clients’ success.”

It is impossible to know when, where, or how, but it’s a safe bet that Mother Nature will make her presence known across the United States every spring and summer.

Just as trees are budding and flowers are blooming, seasonal storms that can turn deadly in the blink of an eye are also springing to life.

Triggered by moisture, unstable air, and lift, thunderstorms are most common from March to May, while many states in the Deep South may experience a secondary severe weather season as late as November and December. That said, thunderstorms have a mind of their own and can occur at any time of the year.

As the leading nationwide mobile fuel supplier in the U.S., Dallas-based Fuel Logic understands that creative fuel solutions are especially vital during the chaos and disruption caused by volatile weather and compromised energy infrastructure.

Extreme Weather Blasts Nation

emergency fuel delivery

The first half of 2024 has already seen wild weather from coast to coast. From torrential rainfall in California to tornadoes in the nation’s midsection and powerful storms in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, nature’s fury has left trails of indiscriminate destruction across numerous cities and counties.

Recently, many suffered through large hail, dangerous lightning, flooding, damaging straight-line winds, and even tornadoes that swept the central and southern United States during the 2024 Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Sirens and warnings to take cover were the last thing anyone expected to hear while relaxing and spending time with family and friends camping, fishing, boating, grilling, and escaping daily routines.

However, news outlets reported that 24 deaths and hundreds of injuries were tied to the vicious holiday weekend storms that halted flights, hammered mobile home parks and bustling campgrounds, and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses across the country.

Brandon Ward, fuel consultant with Fuel Logic, said his teams were prepared when the calls for help started coming in.

Assisting Communities Day and Night

emergency fuel

As minutes turned into terrifying hours and days of tornado-spawning thunderstorms that moved across the country, the trail of shredded homes, uprooted trees, twisted metal, demolished buildings, and flipped vehicles told the story of ravaged lives … over and over.

In full emergency response mode and with a proven track record of delivering fuel to customers through good times and bad, Fuel Logic mobilized teams to provide fuel assistance in any way possible in the storms’ aftermath.

Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas were among the states hardest hit over this year’s Memorial Day weekend, and Fuel Logic teams worked around the clock delivering fuel to help restore power and essential services.

Oklahoma cities including Marietta, Pryor, and Claremore, as well as much of North Texas, took the brunt of the severe weather as it marched east across America’s Heartland.

“We were delivering fuel to just about anyone you can think of,” said Ward. “We assisted hospitals and the Red Cross in Houston where flooding was catastrophic, and we provided fuel to countless businesses including Academy, Home Depot, Braum’s, nursing homes, restoration cleanup companies, and others in multiple states.”

Fuel Logic teams are well versed in traversing tough situations and rough terrain to ensure tanks and generators are filled with diesel, according to Ward. This emergency fuel translates into critical power for electric companies, healthcare facilities, businesses, data centers, and rescue resources during ongoing relief efforts.

“In recent years, our teams helped out during Hurricane Ida in 2021, Tulsa’s Father’s Day storm in 2023, and past severe weather events, including the Great Texas Freeze in 2021, California wildfires in 2020, and Hurricanes Laura, Michael, and Harvey that battered the Gulf Coast and Southeast,” said Ward.

Proactive Storm Response

emergency fuel

While certain weather, like tornadoes, can move in so fast that there is little time to prepare, other storms grant precious time to brace for the potential destruction to come.

This is especially true with hurricanes, during which landfall may be projected hours or days in advance by weather experts.

Year after year, Fuel Logic keeps a close eye on developing weather situations and, when possible, places fuel teams into locations before a storm hits.

That’s precisely what transpired before Hurricane Ida’s fierce Category 4 storm surge, intense rainfall, and maximum sustained wind speeds of 150 mph slammed into Louisiana on August 29, 2021.

Prior to Ida’s arrival on the Gulf Coast, Fuel Logic had strategically positioned several mobile fuel teams in Baton Rouge, La., and other areas throughout the state.

This allowed Fuel Logic to coordinate resources and expedite its fuel delivery to electric companies, military bases, healthcare facilities, and more across cities including Houma, New Orleans, LaPlace, Lafitte, and other hard-hit areas along the Mississippi and Alabama coasts.

“No matter what the situation, we are always committed to assisting customers any way we can,” said Ward. “We pride ourselves on delivering fuel as quickly, efficiently, and safely as possible – especially in dangerous and challenging weather situations where lives and livelihoods are on the line.”

A Fuel Partner You Can Trust

emergency fuel delivery

A rising global average temperature and associated widespread changes in weather patterns will likely continue to spur extreme weather events like flooding, severe storms, extreme heat waves, droughts, and wildfires, according to scientific data.

But while it may not always be possible to predict the weather, determining who to call for fuel assistance when rough weather hits is as easy as remembering fuellogic.com.

With 50 years of combined fuel industry experience, we understand the intricacies of superior fuel service and are committed to providing exceptional fuel solutions.

Whether through emergency fuel assistance, creating an action plan for unexpected outages, or ensuring that generators and tanks are filled for optimal performance, we are here to help with your fuel needs in any way we can.

Whether you need one gallon or hundreds, one time, daily, weekly, or monthly, we believe that when you contact Fuel Logic for mobile fuel, you should expect convenience, flexibility, professionalism, and, above all, reliability.

We also believe that we will always exceed your expectations.

Why wait for a rainy day?

Super Bowl LVIII Buzz in Las Vegas

Few will deny that 2024 brought with it one of the most electrifying NFL Super Bowls in American football history. Behind the scenes, Fuel Logic was part of the action.

The end of January saw the Kansas City Chiefs triumph over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC title game while the San Francisco 49ers enjoyed an epic comeback against the Detroit Lions in the NFC title game.

It was official: the Chiefs and 49ers would meet at Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas on February 11, 2024.

The questions were soon flying. When was kick-off? How could one watch or stream the game? Would the Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls? And would Taylor Swift make it across nine time zones from Tokyo to Las Vegas to watch Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce play?

News and Views from Radio Row

All jokes aside, Super Bowl LVIII was headed to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, and that meant preparation and planning. Lots of it. Especially for the tremendous amount of power demanded by the weeklong Super Bowl experience.

With more than 6,000 credentialed media from 26 countries on hand to cover it all, football’s biggest week kicked off in grand fashion with Super Bowl Opening Night on Monday, February 5, 2024.

This translated into Chiefs and 49ers players and coaches making their only public appearance of the week, followed by days of endless interviews with former players and celebrities, broadcasts, podcasts, and more, streaming live from myriad sports and entertainment outlets, all of which required superior communication infrastructure.

At the heart of the week’s broadcasting activity was Radio Row, now also known as Media Row, set up in Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

Fueling Media Messaging

Saunders Electric, renowned power systems provider for the television, live broadcast, and live event industries, had been tapped to power Radio Row.

Ensuring an uninterruptable power supply for a 24/7 flow of content from nearly 200 outlets – including sports talk radio stations, podcasters, and national media platforms – camped out at Radio Row called for a power back up strategy that promised flexibility, performance, and most importantly, reliability.

Saunders called in long-time trusted partner Fuel Logic to assist by providing a steady supply of fuel for the multitude of generators and other equipment supporting Radio Row’s energy needs.

Super Bowl LVIII Buzz in Las Vegas

Major news and entertainment outlets including CBS Sports, iHeart Radio, Sirius XM, the Associated Press, NBC Sports, Fox Sports Radio, Paramount, TikTok, FanDuel, DraftKings, and Yahoo Sports were among the industry heavyweights that filled the luxury resort’s exhibit hall and broadcasted Super Bowl-related content daily across the globe.

The persistent humming of generators, engines, and machinery hinted at the extraordinary energy required to keep the lights on, screens going, and conversations flowing at such an iconic event.

Throughout Super Bowl week, Fuel Logic teams expeditiously delivered gas and diesel, filled generators, and coordinated mobile fuel service around the clock for planned – and sometimes unplanned – situations.

One Big Party

Super Bowl LVIII Buzz in Las Vegas

Mandalay Bay was just one of countless sites in Las Vegas, keeping pace with the dynamic narrative brought on by Super Bowl week guests, revelers, A-list celebrities, events, and more.

Beyond the walls of Radio Row, Fuel Logic provided mobile fuel delivery to Las Vegas’ MGM Grand and Resorts World, which hosted multiple mega Super Bowl parties, as well as other clients needing convenient, dependable, and efficient mobile fuel.

While the glitzy city in the desert is no stranger to showing visitors a good time, serving as home to Super Bowl LVIII meant leveling up its game a notch.

But when the dust settled after the Chiefs’ overtime win, Las Vegas earned high marks for its lavish brand of hospitality.

Amidst the epic hustle and bustle that came with hosting the Super Bowl for the first time, Sin City brought the fun with concerts, live events, luxury accommodations, delectable dining, and an exciting array of diversions that only the Entertainment Capital of the World could deliver.

And that’s a victory by any measure.

Create a Winning Game Plan with Fuel Logic

Super Bowl LVIII Buzz in Las Vegas

Fuel Logic’s track record of providing superior mobile fueling service speaks volumes about why the company was a natural fit to help fuel Las Vegas’ Super Bowl LVIII entertainment extravaganza.

Based in Dallas, Texas, Fuel Logic is well-versed in assisting companies of all sizes across the nation thanks to more than 50 years of combined fuel industry experience. Household names like Google, Walmart, and Pepsi, as well as smaller businesses spanning diverse industries, enjoy the peace of mind, attentive service, and cost savings that Fuel Logic delivers.

It is not every day that one of the world’s most elite car manufacturers requests fuel for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

But when the 2023 edition of the famed Bugatti Grand Tour America got underway on a recent bright October day, fuel was a critical component of the exhilarating driving experience … and Fuel Logic went above and beyond to answer the call.

Organized annually for Bugatti customers, this year’s unique expedition took shape as a four-day excursion during which drivers navigated winding roads amidst scenic vistas of the magnificent American West.

And when the illustrious procession of French hypersports cars hit the road, the Fuel Logic fuel truck was there every step of the way, racing from one stop to the next to fill up tanks to ensure the continuous roar of W16 engines and seamless cruising between destinations.

Ready to Roll

The trip kicked off at The Lodge at Blue Sky, a resort near Park City, Utah, where drivers were treated to an epic evening of cocktails and dinner inside a rustic arena crafted from recycled local barn wood. The venue’s elegantly appointed dining table was strategically placed between two rows of 20 gleaming Bugatti hypersports cars.

The meal, music, and camaraderie between the Bugatti owners set the stage for the fun to come in the days ahead.

The next morning, after a drivers meeting, the procession of Bugattis departed Park City in grand fashion and headed to their lunch stop, an iconic 1924 Conoco filling station in Helper, Utah, that had been meticulously restored. The stop along U.S. Route 91 in Utah’s Carbon Corridor provided ample opportunities for Instagram-worthy shots juxtaposing the vintage Continental Oil Company signage with the sleek Bugattis against sweeping blue skies.

The dedicated Fuel Logic professional provided premium fuel to ensure all the sports cars were topped off and ready to keep rolling, and the Bugattis made their way onward.

Next stop: Desert bliss.

Chiseled Charm in Moab

That afternoon, the drivers and their companions cruised winding roads through the breathtaking canyons of southeastern Utah, taking in spectacular sights through the windows and Sky View roofs of their Bugatti Chirons and other models.

Panoramic vistas of jagged terrain, shadowed mountaintops, and splashes of dazzling fall color made the drive even more stunning and memorable.

The Bugatti procession arrived at Hole N” the Rock, a most unusual home in the desert and one of the Moab area’s most famous roadside attractions.

The 5,000-square-foot home, carved into sandstone by the Christensen family in the 1940s, draws about 500 visitors daily and served as a whimsical pit stop for the Bugatti drivers.

While the cars remained parked at Hole N’’ the Rock, the group was transported to a surprise location nearby, where they savored a gourmet dinner served in a red-walled sandstone cave. The Tour participants retired for the night under celestial skies in their exquisite glamping accommodations at ULUM® Moab.

Overnight, behind the scenes, Fuel Logic’s fuel pro refueled the Bugatti tanks, ensuring the luxury cars were primed for the following day’s adventure.

Gateway to Nature’s Wonders

A glorious desert sunrise, vast untamed landscape, and crisp fall breezes offered an enchanting moment to pause with morning coffee before revving engines for Day 2 of the Bugatti Grand Tour America 2023.

Once seated behind their respective wheels, the drivers eagerly continued their journey, blissfully unaware of Mother Nature’s surprises that lay ahead.

The cars departed their Hole N’’ the Rock stop and headed toward Gateway Canyon, blazing asphalt trails through towering red rockscapes, nature’s vivid foliage, and dramatic peaks and valleys.

Dark skies on the horizon signaled impending inclement weather, and later that day, the Bugatti owners – and the Fuel Logic fuel driver – were forced to navigate perilous conditions on their way from ULUM to their next destination, Aspen, Colorado.

Over time, blue skies transitioned into rain and eventually snow as the drivers continued their trek eastward into the Centennial State.

Even through less-than-desirable weather conditions, the Fuel Logic mobile fuel provider ensured that the Bugattis were adequately fueled up for the miles yet to come.

With the assistance of state-of-the-art safety technologies, the high-performance hypersports cars safely reached their evening target, and the group gathered for an elegant reception and dinner at a luxurious private home where opulent environs wowed them, a candle-lit meal and conversation, and an aerial acrobat.

The historic 130-year-old Hotel Jerome, situated in the heart of downtown Aspen, promised an indulgent respite for the overnight hours.

A Drive to Remember

The schedule called for continuing to Vail during the final day of the Tour; however, heavy snowfall dictated a change in plans.

Due to morning whiteout conditions, the itinerary for the day shifted to include a private shopping event at Hermès followed by a leisurely, private lunch at Clark’s Oyster Bar in Aspen.

As the clouds cleared that afternoon, several Bugatti Grand Tour America members chose to put their personalized cars to the test and braved the mountainous roads around Aspen.

And guess who was also there?

On hand to top off the Bugattis’ tanks, Fuel Logic provided convenient, customized mobile fuel service directly from the fuel truck to the cars where they were parked.

The day drew to a close with a final outing at Aspen’s famed Kemo Sabe store, where the group designed their own mountain-chic Western hats before transitioning to Catch for a celebratory dinner.

At the end of the night, just as wonderfully as it all began, the epic 608-mile Bugatti driving experience across some of America’s most captivating land came to a bittersweet end.

The Bugatti Grand Tour America 2023 may have been over, but the memories, friendships, and spirit of adventure will always endure.

Fuel Logic’s Commitment to Excellence

Like the iconic Bugatti brand, Dallas-based Fuel Logic shares a deep passion for its service and customers.

Whether Fuel Logic is filling the tanks of Bugattis, construction equipment, generators, refrigerated trailers, or fleets, our commitment to providing superior, no-contract service across the United States never wavers.

We have an extensive, proven track record of providing strategic mobile fuel solutions to global firms such as Google, Walmart, and Pepsi, to name a few, and customers including hospitals, nursing homes, construction sites, grocery stores, restaurants, special events, sports venues, and more.

Further, we also pride ourselves on devising creative solutions for extraordinary, time-sensitive situations that may occur due to power outages, severe weather events, or other unforeseen circumstances.

In this case, when Bugatti event planners needed a last-minute premium fuel solution due to an issue with another fuel provider, they called Fuel Logic with only days to spare.

Fortunately, Brandon Ward, fuel consultant with Fuel Logic, knew just what to do to secure the fuel Bugatti needed.

For its esteemed Grand Tour America 2023, Bugatti required two to three daily refuelings for its 20 Bugatti sports cars driving from Utah to Colorado.

Over the course of four days, the Bugatti Tour members needed fuel amidst a range of conditions – sun, rain, and even snow – on the winding roads of the excursion, and the Fuel Logic fuel truck was there at every turn – figuratively and literally.

At Fuel Logic, we understand that unexpected situations often require urgent solutions that are dependable, dynamic, and efficient, and we were honored to serve as the private “pit crew” and provide a continuous fuel supply for Bugatti’s exclusive Grand Tour America 2023.

“We pride ourselves on doing everything we can to not say ‘no’ to customers,” said Ward. “We will always do everything we can to accommodate our clients’ needs, leaving them wondering why they would ever do business with anyone else and ecstatic they found Fuel Logic!”

When long-time Fuel Logic customer Walmart called the Fuel Logic team late in 2022, the situation was dire. It was a call that no one with perishable stock or cargo ever wants to make.

The Maryland Walmart store was bustling amidst the fall holiday season, and the store manager discovered that one of its refrigerated trailers had run out of fuel during the overnight hours.

This meant that the storage trailer’s refrigeration generators had shut down, and a truckload of turkeys, hams, and other holiday delectable were at risk of being compromised or lost due to inadequate temperature control. To make matters worse, a refrigerated trailer with no fuel may try to restart over and over, adding insult to injury by eventually draining the unit’s battery.

reefer fuel delivery

How cold is a reefer?

A refrigerated trailer, or “reefer,” typically maintains temperatures that range roughly anywhere from 70 degrees to -13 degrees Fahrenheit, although some specialized refrigeration units can chill to even lower temperatures.

Ideally, a reefer’s 50-gallon fuel tank could run for four to five days but must be monitored closely and diligently maintained. See more detailed info on refrigerated trailers here.

Driving does not impact fuel consumption because a reefer uses a closed-loop fuel system that is independent of the truck. However, it is generally considered best practice to keep a close eye on a reefer’s fuel gauge, refuel every day that it is in use, and keep the tank from going below ¼ full.

But as we all know, life happens. And, on occasion, a reefer may run out of fuel, which is generally considered a fuel emergency.

Empty reefer = Fuel emergency

In this situation, the Walmart store in Maryland had several reefer trailers storing extra food, but through an unfortunate oversight, one trailer had run out of fuel … and time was of the essence.

The company contacted Fuel Logic for mobile fuel assistance since Fuel Logic offers service 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. The mobile fuel order process was greatly expedited since Walmart was an existing Fuel Logic customer and was already in the system. And within a matter of hours, Fuel Logic had fuel en route to the empty reefer.

However, restarting a reefer that has run out of fuel is not always as simple as it might seem.

When the Walmart manager had difficulties getting the reefer engine going after it had been refueled, he called Fuel Logic, and Brandon Ward, fuel consultant, sprang into action.

Understanding that every minute mattered, Brandon remotely guided his client route planning from 1,300 miles away by Facetime by restarting the unit’s engine.

After instructing his client how to climb up the catwalk to access the cooling unit safely, Brandon explained how to prime the fuel system, which would eventually help bring the engine back online.

“Most refueling drivers aren’t usually mechanics and typically won’t do anything beyond refueling, such as priming the fuel pump, due to liability reasons,” Ward explained.

Save the turkeys

Fortunately, Ward’s extensive fuel industry experience has afforded him a comprehensive understanding of what it sometimes takes to get a temperamental reefer back up and running.

“I walked him through turning off the trailer, loosening the fuel filter, unscrewing and carefully opening the bleeder valve, and then depressing the manual fuel pump plunger to get fuel flowing back into the fuel filter,” said Ward. “This is known as ‘priming the pump’, and it can take anywhere from five minutes to an hour – depending upon how long the engine has been off – to get the engine restarted.”

Thankfully, after a brief time, the reefer engine cranked up, the trailer’s cooling system was humming, and a costly food cargo crisis was averted.

“We will always go the extra mile – literally and figuratively – to help our clients,” said Ward. “At Fuel Logic, we fully understand and appreciate how unexpected fuel challenges can critically impact our customers’ operations, especially during the holiday season. We take immense pride in going above and beyond to do everything we can to help our customers.”

Brandon’s knowledge and hands-on instructions in priming the pump ensured that the reefer engine roared back to life, saving not only turkeys and hams but also the day for our valued customers.

It was Father’s Day weekend 2023.

A weekend that was supposed to be a time for enjoying fun, relaxation, and delicious food with family members and friends.

But Mother Nature had other plans for Tulsa, Okla., and surrounding areas that weekend.

Taking Aim at Tulsa

On Saturday, June 17, residents around the Greater Tulsa, or “Green Country” area, went about their day at home, in parks, on nearby lakes, camping, grilling out, and just visiting with family and friends.

Temperatures warmed to the low 90s under mostly sunny skies, but the heat and humidity of that day were feeding an atmospheric disturbance building out west across the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles.

Oklahomans are certainly no strangers to severe weather outbreaks. After all, the Sooner State is generally known as the heart of Tornado Alley. In fact, thunderstorms occur about 55 days per year in eastern Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey.

So in the days leading up to Father’s Day weekend 2023, residents were not overly surprised when news stations and weather experts started forecasting the potential for storms, especially during Saturday’s overnight hours.

As darkness settled in on Saturday evening, temperatures dropped, and the wind picked up – telltale signs that storms were brewing. Weather forecasters put out urgent messages about thunderstorm warnings blanketing the Northeastern Oklahoma region, reporting that all modes of weather were possible: damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes, and localized flooding.

Angry, jagged clouds churned and rotated across the state against a backdrop of ominous shades of green, grey, and black, setting the stage for a rough night of severe weather.

Boasting a deep, rotating updraft called a mesocyclone, the supercell storm gained intensity as it marched eastward across Oklahoma.

Around 10 pm, the storm blew through Oklahoma City, and by midnight, tornado sirens were sounding in Tulsa.

By that time, the storm had grown significantly and was packing hurricane-force wind gusts of more than 100 miles per hour. Dangerous lightning streaked across the sky, thunder rolled, and transformers blew in every direction, casting momentary eerie green glows against Tulsa’s turbulent night sky.

Residents hunkered in hallways, closets, and bathrooms in their homes as sheets of heavy rain fell and a wall of wind hit the Tulsa metro. But many slept, unaware of how bad the storm truly was.

The storm moved quickly, but it left behind a trail of destruction during those overnight hours of Father’s Day, June 18.

Assessing the Aftermath

Emergency crews rallied throughout the night to assess damage and begin clearing roads. The devastation, which would not be clearly visible until daylight, was profound … even in the darkness.

Tulsa had been hard-hit by what weather experts explained was an especially powerful “derecho” – defined as a long-lasting squall line of severe storms that produce winds of greater than 58 mph along a path longer than 240 miles.

The intense straight-line winds that tore across the Tulsa metro uprooted massive trees, snapped branches and trunks, damaged cars, ripped off roofs, and shattered doors and windows at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. Business signs were blown down as were light poles and traffic lights, and debris of all shapes and sizes was strewn in a twisted mess across streets, yards, homes, businesses, parking lots, and more.

Unfortunately, the Father’s Day storm also struck a massive blow to the region’s power grid, knocking out power to thousands of residents, businesses, medical facilities, and more.

At the height of the power outage, Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO), the state’s second largest electric utility provider, reported that more than 200,000 customers were without power, the vast majority of which were in the Tulsa metro.

The tornadic-level damage had snapped hundreds of utility poles and cross-arms and left downed power lines across the metro.

After damage surveys that Sunday, National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists said that three tornadoes had helped fuel the destructive storm.

State leaders eventually signed a State of Emergency declaration for 10 counties in northeastern Oklahoma.

Tulsa Delivery Power Outage

No Power, No Fuel

As the power outage stretched from hours into days, the possibility of fuel shortages loomed. Gasoline and diesel were in short supply as fuel stations were overrun with drivers seeking fuel. Long lines stacked up at sites that had fuel while many other convenience stores and gas stations had no power and no fuel.

The fuel situation across the Tulsa metro literally changed by the minute because the weekend storm had disrupted power to three of Tulsa’s main fuel terminals, including facilities owned by Magellan Midstream Partners and Holly Refinery, and fuel was not coming in as fast as it was going out.

Tulsa-based Magellan transports, stores, and distributes refined petroleum products and crude oil while Holly Refinery operates a crude oil refinery in Tulsa where it produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other products from primarily sweet crude oil.

Immediately after the storm, phones started ringing at Fuel Logic’s Dallas-based office. And they continued to ring around the clock for days to come.

“Our call volume doubled,” said Brandon Ward, fuel consultant at Fuel Logic.

Because Fuel Logic teams answer calls 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, they were more than ready to assist existing and new customers calling from the Tulsa area.

With extensive experience helping during natural disasters all over the United States, Fuel Logic mobilized its vast network of fuel providers to secure fuel for a wide variety of customers in the Tulsa area.

Ward shared how Fuel Logic’s logistics coordinators devised solutions to schedule fuel deliveries of 700 gallons twice a day for one call center client, set up multiple large fuel deliveries for a data center, and provided critical fuel support for vital infrastructure, including cell phone towers.

With Tulsa’s main fuel terminals out of commission due to the power outage, Fuel Logic’s ability to deliver fuel into the city played a pivotal role in helping businesses maintain operations until the power grid could be restored.

With its variety of fuel truck sizes and proactive business philosophy, Fuel Logic is known for thinking outside the box and working expeditiously to deliver fuel wherever and however it can across disaster areas.

Ward said the Fuel Logic teams delivered fuel to generators at Tulsa-area nursing homes, hardware stores, medical centers, casinos, manufacturing facilities, a women’s shelter, youth shelter, Home Depot, and more.

For days and nights on end, Fuel Logic trucks continued to deliver gasoline and diesel to countless customers, including restaurants that were helping feed residents with no power, shelters that were providing temporary refuge for many people, and healthcare facilities that relied on generators to continue caring for patients.

“We came up with a lot of creative measures to supply fuel any way we could,” said Ward.

Resilience and Restoration

While the storm left a trail of destruction in its wake that Father’s Day weekend, community spirit was alive and well as support for Tulsa poured in from many directions.

Across the nation, it is standard protocol for utility companies to help each other across state lines when disaster strikes and that’s exactly what took place in Tulsa.

The storm resulted in the most significant power outage PSO had seen since the January 2007 North American ice storm, and PSO reported that alongside its 700 employees, 2,700 reinforcements from about 20 different states, including Delaware, Indiana, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and more, also helped restore power in the Tulsa metro.

Fuel Logic was honored to be a part of the coordinated recovery efforts in Tulsa, providing fuel assistance and hope … one gallon at a time.

“We believe in helping out as best we can during extreme weather events like Tulsa’s Father’s Day storm,” said Ward. “No matter how challenging the situation is, we are committed to providing superior fuel service as quickly and efficiently as possible. And where there’s a will, there’s always a way.”
